The BJS created the National Crime Statistics Exchange (NCS-X) to provide law enforcement, policymakers, and the public with detailed information about criminal incidents and their circumstances.

While many law enforcement agencies collect incident-level data – information on victim and perpetrator characteristics, relationships, location of the incident, use of weapons, severity of injury, etc. – this depth of crime information is not currently available at the national level. The CSS-X is a statistical system capable of producing detailed national estimates of the scope and characteristics of crimes known to law enforcement. For more information about the program, including answers to frequently asked questions, visit the BJS NCS-X (www.bjs.gov/content/ncsx.cfm) webpage. Since 1791, more than 20,000 law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty in the United States, and their names are engraved on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
