An all-terrain bike equipped with a green and white license plate is only marked as off-road and cannot be used on public roads. The registration plate must be affixed to the front of the vehicle. Only 4T dual sport bikes can be plated in British Columbia, etc., unless you know the person issuing signs/documents, or they are clues, but RARITY 🙂 If you take out insurance and register the bike, you must give them the VIN. The location of the insurance will look for this and if it is a bike not approved by road, they will not give you a sign etc. In Ontario, the off-highway motorcycle legislation is the Off-Highway Vehicles Act. Copies of the off-road vehicle manual are available for approximately $8 at the office where you purchase your license plates. A dirt bike with a blue and white license plate can be used on public and off-road roads. The other thing that needs to be assured is that the alternator/rectifier on the off-road motorcycle is strong enough to power the electronics. Off-road motorcycles don`t have a lot of electronics, but a headlight kills a battery if you can`t charge it Fortunately, many bike manufacturers build bisport bikes, so you can buy some very nice bikes right in the showroom. Next, make sure it is safe (i.e. lighting, tires, etc. which make it really legal for the road), then drive it as if everyone in a car or truck is an idiot. I do not know what it is in Alberta. But in Ontario, every bike can and should have a plate.
We have green and blue plates. The blue signs are for bikes approved for the road, the green plates are only for off-road vehicles. If my bike is sold as green, you can never paint it blue. I suspect Alberta is similar, but ask Alberta Transportation. To confirm, take the registration papers or purchase contract with the year/make/model of the bike to the place from where you receive the license plates and ask them if you can make it legal on the road. Yes, it`s in my name, but not plated, just get a few spot tires, a small rearview mirror, speedometer brake lights, headlights, a horn and will use manual signals as it is still legal in ON. Hey, I have a 2012 KTM 250 Xc that is currently dressed in green, I have theft and fire insurance and I don`t have a license plate, but it is registered as an off-road vehicle, is there still I can make this vehicle legal on the road in Ontario Nottawasaga OPP Const. It is a bit complicated because, at least in British Columbia, what applies here may not be the same as in Alberta, but for example, a 2003 DRZ400e with a single headlight is legal for the road because they give you insurance and license plates. If possible, a bike should be homologated in this way, as it opens doors to many countries that a cyclist with a strict off-road license plate cannot legally travel. Keep your machine SILENT, 94dbs or less. If you want to know how noisy or quiet your bike is, the BMA has a sound level meter and will be happy to test it and advise you. I don`t know how the previous owner got my blue plated 96 RMX 250, but I`m swirling for having it certified and in driving condition next spring so I can ride on the trails. It`s going to be in Alberta, it`s kind of weird because I can have a plate for every old bike applauded, I don`t know how the cops would feel if I drove it down the streets, lol. Vin is the key and 4 other things, but again British Columbia, but I know I`m interested in what ON looks like, I would go through the Ontario local service office before going through any $to get a designation. NO INSURANCE! what is needed on paths and roads). Some forests now require a permit (parts of the Calabogie area!) Others require membership in the OFTR. Take a look at the following rules and make sure YOU are LEGAL! Always know the rules of the forest in which you drive! Check out their website: many are closed in the spring, some have restricted areas, some have ongoing events, some don`t have driving days you should know before you leave! If it`s already coated in blue, all you need is all the necessary DOT equipment and security, the plate, insurance, and sticker, and you`re good to go! What are the ~ total cost? As far as I know, you need the basics (mirros, lights, horn, tires, etc.). However, I can`t get a clear answer on what I need on the paperwork side. So whatever bike you`re thinking of, take the VIN and ask them if you can get insurance and get a plate BEFORE you buy it. Once you have them, you can ask the BEFOREhand police what to expect on the bike when they pass you.
